Tenerife enjoys a subtropical climate with mild winters and warm summers, making it a year-round destination. However, the best time for you depends on your priorities, budget, and tolerance for crowds.
Winter Months: December to February
Winter brings the busiest season as UK visitors escape cold weather. Temperatures average 18–22°C, perfect for outdoor activities without extreme heat. Expect crowded beaches, higher prices, and busy attractions. If you prefer a quieter experience, avoid Christmas and New Year weeks. Rainfall is slightly higher but still minimal.
Spring: March to May
Spring offers ideal conditions—warm but not scorching, fewer tourists than winter, and reasonable prices. March can still be busy with families on Easter holidays, but April and May are particularly pleasant. Wildflowers bloom in March and April, making hiking especially rewarding. This is arguably the best time for most visitors.
Summer: June to August
Summer is hot, with temperatures reaching 28–30°C. While beaches are superb, the heat can be intense, particularly inland and on lower elevations. Tourist numbers peak, and prices rise accordingly. Beach facilities get crowded by midday. However, it's ideal if you want guaranteed sunshine and don't mind the heat and crowds.
Autumn: September to November
Autumn remains warm (22–26°C) with fewer tourists than summer but more than spring. September and early October can still see holiday crowds and occasional rainfall. Late October and November are quieter and excellent value, though the weather becomes slightly less predictable. Accommodation and car hire prices drop noticeably.
Special Considerations
The island's interior, including Mount Teide, can be significantly cooler than coastal areas. Higher elevations may experience wind and occasional rain even when the coast is sunny. The southern resorts (Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos) are generally sunnier and drier than the north.
Best Times for Specific Activities
Hiking Mount Teide is excellent from April to October. Whale watching peaks in summer. Windsurfing works year-round but is best in summer. Cultural exploration and relaxed sightseeing suit spring and autumn perfectly.
Consider visiting in May or October for the ideal balance of weather, crowds, and value. However, Tenerife rarely disappoints regardless of season.
