Tenerife is generally very safe for UK visitors. Crime against tourists is relatively rare, and healthcare facilities are excellent. However, understanding local conditions and taking sensible precautions ensures a worry-free holiday.

Health Precautions

The Canaries are malaria-free, and no vaccinations are required for UK visitors. Standard travel insurance including medical cover is strongly recommended. Your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) provides limited cover, but private insurance is more comprehensive and covers repatriation.

Sun protection is essential. Tenerife's sun is intense year-round. Use factor 50+ sunscreen, reapply regularly, and limit midday sun exposure. The sea reflects sunlight, increasing burn risk. Dehydration happens quickly; drink water constantly, not just when thirsty.

Water and Food Safety

Tap water is safe to drink throughout Tenerife. However, some visitors' stomachs react to different mineral content; bottled water is inexpensive and widely available. Food hygiene standards are high in established restaurants. Avoid street food from unlicensed vendors, though properly cooked fresh fish from reputable sources is usually safe.

Medical Services

Tenerife has excellent healthcare. Tourist areas have private clinics with English-speaking staff. Hospitals in Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz handle serious cases. Pharmacies (farmacias) are plentiful and staff speak English. Many medications available on prescription in the UK are available over-the-counter here at lower cost.

Personal Safety

Tenerife is safer than many UK cities, but exercise normal precautions. Avoid displaying expensive jewellery, cameras, or large amounts of cash. Don't leave valuables unattended on beaches. Pickpocketing occurs in crowded areas; keep bags secure. Avoid isolated areas after dark, particularly in poorer neighbourhoods.

Road Safety

If driving, remember Spaniards drive on the right. Mountain roads are narrow and winding; drive carefully and expect faster traffic. Seatbelts are compulsory. Drink-driving laws are strict. Petrol station attendants pump fuel; don't attempt it yourself. Parking in town centres can be challenging; use designated areas.

Beach Safety

Lifeguards patrol main beaches during summer. Respect warning flags indicating dangerous conditions. Atlantic beaches have strong currents; ask locals about safe swimming areas. Sea urchins inhabit some areas; wear water shoes. Jet skis and parasailing operators should be established companies with safety records.

Emergency Contacts

Emergency services (police, ambulance, fire): 112. Tourist police: available in major resorts. Register with your embassy before travelling if staying long-term.

Insurance and Documentation

Comprehensive travel insurance is essential and inexpensive. Keep copies of important documents separate from originals. Register your passport details with your accommodation.

Tenerife welcomes millions of visitors safely annually. Common sense and sensible precautions ensure your holiday remains enjoyable and incident-free.
