Mount Teide, at 3,718 metres, is Spain's highest peak and Tenerife's most iconic landmark. Its otherworldly landscape and accessible summit attract thousands of visitors annually. With proper planning, most reasonably fit people can reach the top.

Getting There

Teide National Park is accessible by car or bus from any resort. The winding mountain road passes through changing vegetation zones and dramatic volcanic scenery. Most visitors drive to the cable car station (Estación de Teleférico) at 2,356 metres, reducing the climb significantly.

The Cable Car Option

The cable car ascends to 3,555 metres in eight minutes, leaving only a 163-metre walk to the summit. This option suits visitors with limited fitness or time. The views from the cable car are spectacular. Book tickets in advance during peak season, as capacity is limited and queues form early.

Walking Routes

The summit walk from the cable car station is straightforward but steep. It takes approximately 45 minutes. The path is well-marked and relatively safe, though loose volcanic rock requires careful footing. The final section is steeper but manageable.

For experienced hikers, the route from Montaña Blanca avoids the cable car entirely. This 7-kilometre trail climbs 1,200 metres and takes 4–5 hours. It's more rewarding but significantly more demanding. Acclimatisation is essential.

Altitude and Health

Altitude sickness affects some visitors, particularly those ascending rapidly. Symptoms include headaches, nausea, and breathlessness. Ascending gradually, staying hydrated, and avoiding alcohol helps. Descending immediately relieves symptoms. Anyone with heart or lung conditions should consult their doctor before attempting the climb.

Weather and Conditions

Weather changes rapidly at altitude. Morning sunshine can turn to cloud by midday, reducing visibility to metres. Bring layers, waterproof jacket, and sturdy walking boots. Summer is warmest but also cloudiest midday. Spring and autumn offer clearer views. Wind can be fierce; dress accordingly.

Practical Considerations

Start early to avoid afternoon clouds and crowds. Bring plenty of water (at least 2 litres), sun protection, and snacks. The summit offers a small café with expensive refreshments. Toilets are available at the cable car station but not on the mountain.

Permits aren't required for the cable car or standard routes. However, restrictions occasionally apply during volcanic monitoring; check the national park website before visiting.

The Experience

Standing on Spain's highest peak with views across the Atlantic to other islands is unforgettable. Allow time to absorb the otherworldly volcanic landscape. Many visitors spend hours photographing the unique terrain.

Mount Teide deserves its status as Tenerife's must-do experience.
