Tenerife fires - 14,000 evacuated. Fires seems stable though

August 1st, 2007

in the recent few days a lot of terrible fires have caught on in Tenerife and other places on the Canary Islands (Gran Canaria).
Associated Press reports that 14,000 people have been evacuated in Canary Island fires

SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Spain - At least 14,000 people have evacuated homes, hotels and campgrounds on the Canary Islands as firefighters struggled Tuesday to extinguish fires on two of the archipelago’s popular tourist spots.

The Tenerife fires seems to be the worst with the majority of people being evacuated here:

About 8,800 people were displaced on Tenerife island, where fires have burned 37,500 acres of mainly forest and destroyed 900 homes since Friday, the Canary Islands regional government said

Furtunatly no-one have been reported injured or dead from the Tenerife fires, so we’re of course very thankful.
The strong winds are making the fire fighting very very hard and:

Winds of 40 mph and temperatures up to 104 degrees were spreading the flames across the treetops. Tenerife authorities were fighting fires on four fronts, only one of which was under control. Many roads were closed.

Tenerife fires - Fire in Canary Islands - source: Daily Express

The Daily Express reports from the Tenerife fires that around 10,000 people have been evacuated from the Canary Islands and Tenerife fires. British tourists face a hard time in Tenerife now as a lot of people are being evacuated and Tenerife is a very popular vacation destination for Brits:

More than 10,000 people have been evacuated from homes and hotels on the popular holiday destinations of Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

The reason behind the fires are the very high temperatures we’re having in Tenerife this time:

Summer temperatures of around 40 degrees have been exacerbated by strong winds, laying waste to large mountainous and pinewood areas and forcing the closure of several motorways on Tenerife.

TenerifeNews reports:

According to Ricardo Melchior, president of the Cabildo, the perimeter of the bush fire is reported to be 62.8kms covering an area of 13,695 hectares of pine woods, bushland and abandoned farmland although the president stressed that not all of the affected area had been burned and latest estimates put the figure at around 20 per cent of the total.

and quotes only around 8,500 people being evacuted in the Tenerife fires:

So far some 8,450 people have been evacuated from their homes.

Both the Tenerife airports are functioning 100% and flights are going in and out of Tenerife and the Canary Islands.

Unfortunately the Tenerife fire has apparently destroyed an entire town. Rian reports that Masca has been completely eaten by the flames:

“Masca, which is one of the most picturesque villages on the archipelago and a place of pilgrimage for thousands of tourists from all over the world, as well as its surrounding forests have been completely burned after all of its 120 citizens were evacuated Tuesday,” a correspondent for Canarias24horas newspaper told RIA Novosti.

The NASA picture below shows the smoke coming from the Canary fires and judging from the image, the situation seemed worst on Gran Canaria. The picture is taken of the Canary Islands on Tuesday, 31st of july 2007:

Holidays to Tenerife - a guide to the first timer to Tenerife

May 8th, 2007

Holidays to Tenerife

Going on holidays to Tenerife is extremely popular, and for very good reason. This small island, located a short distance off the western coast of Morocco, is a treasure trove of sun, sea and sea. It’s a fabulous destination in terms of the activities on offer, the restaurants, choice of accommodation and availability of direct flights from most regional and hub airports.

Year round sunshine

Unlike other popular tourist resorts on the Spanish mainland such as Puerto Banus, Marbella and Murcia, Tenerife has sunshine all year round. Tenerife gets even more sun than the Balearic Islands because of it’s southerly latitude and close proximity to the largest desert in the world, the Sahara. Just as in most northern hemisphere countries, temperatures in Tenerife peak during the summer months and drop down into the balmy but comfortable mid-twenties during the winter months. Therefore, you can go on holidays to Tenerife any time of the year! Fancy Christmas in the sun? No problem, just hop on a flight to Tenerife!

Choice of accommodation

One of the best things about a holiday to Tenerife is the huge range of accommodation that has made the island retreat so popular with tourists. Whether it is cheap self-catering apartments, half-board hotels or top of the line luxury hotels you’ll find them all here in abundance. There are also plenty of privately owned luxury villas with amazing views over the coast and mountain ranges to the rear.

Getting there

Years ago Tenerife represented the final stage in the hippy trail, an adventure that took travellers all the way down from the UK through France, Spain, Portugal and Morocco to end up in Tenerife. Thankfully, getting to Tenerife from the UK is a lot easier nowadays! There are a multitude of cheap flights to Tenerife on offer via popular low cost carriers such as easyJet and Ryanair. Other major airlines that fly direct from the UK to Tenerife include BMI and British Airways. This wide choice of flights makes Tenerife an affordable destination at any time of the year.

So what are you waiting for? Tenerife and the sunshine are waiting for you, and it only takes a few short hours to get there and start enjoying your cheap holidays!

Tenerife News: Santa Cruz Carnival 2007

January 19th, 2007

The Puerto de la Cruz Canival on Tenerife Island will in 2007 take place 15th to 24th of February. The agenda is as follows:

15th February: Gala for the Election of the 2007 Carnival Queen
17th February: Proclamatory Parade
21st February: Burial of the Sardine
24th February: “Coso” The apotheosis of Carnival

The Puerto de la Cruz Canival on Tenerife is a historic and cultural event. Puntoinfo puts it this way:

The carnival has been declared of international tourist interest, being one of the longest-standing carnivals of the island. Even during the time when the fiesta was banned

Paloma Beach has very nice summary of the atmosphere at the Carnaval de Santa Cruz:

For around 2 weeks every February the streets of Santa Cruz are filled with beautiful girls, amazing costumes, dancing and singing. The carnival starts with the election of the Carnival Queen and ends with the burial of the sardine

If you read spanish, here is the 2007 Página Oficial del Carnaval de Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

They have produced this excellent video about the Carnival:

Tenerife Santa Cruz Carnival

See more Tenerife videos here.

The whole Tenerife Guide team will be there hanging out and enjoying ourselves. We hope to see you there - preferrably before we bury the sardine :)
